If I’m bringing my dog to the groomer regularly do I still need to brush their hair at home?

Yes, all dogs should receive at home brushing to remove dead skin, hair and dirt. If you’re unable to do so the groomer may recommend they come in weekly/bi-weekly for brushing appointments.

-How often should my dog be professionally groomed?

There are many answers for this:

* Doodles for example have a wide array of hair textures. The more you have to vacuum at home the more they shed and therefore they may be able to get by with more at home brushing. Doodles as such tend to have straighter hair that doesn’t tangle as easily and resembles closer to their double coated cousins rather than the poodle side.

If your doodle is on the opposite end with very little shedding and very curly hair then they need to be groomed very routinely. The best kept doodles are on a 4 week rotation. If you don’t mind a shorter cut you may be able to make it to 8 weeks, but we do not recommend going more than 12 weeks without a shave down to prevent uncomfortable matting, that can actually damage your dog’s skin.

*Hair type dogs are dogs that shed similar to human hair and it’s mostly straight. It will keep growing until it is cut and needs regular brushing to keep it from getting tangled. For example consider yorkies, shih tzus and afghan hounds. These range in the 4-8 week appointments based on how much brushing you’re willing to do at home and how long you want the hair to be.

*Double coated dogs are also a wide spectrum simply due to the length of their hair. Boxers and bully breeds to leonbergers and great pyrenees. How much they come to be professionally groomed depends on how much time you are willing to put into coat care. Even the best maintained great pyrenees can come in every 4 weeks and take 4 hours to be professionally groomed because of their thick density of hair. Considering we have medium sized dogs with long double coats the personal reference I give is that our dogs (small/medium australian/american shepherds) get full grooming every 3-4 weeks in the shop with our professional tools to make at home maintenance minimal.

*What about nail trimming? Unfortunately this answer ranges quite a bit too! But the minimum answer is still generally 4 weeks to prevent overgrowth. Some dogs hold their feet differently and their daily walks will file their nails down easily. Other dogs walk more on the backs of their feet and their nails never touch the ground thereby growing long too easily.

-What breeds do you groom?

We groom all dog breeds, of all shapes and sizes. We do family dog hair styles. Sometimes we will get requests for breed standard hair cuts but we do not consider ourselves experts at show cuts.

-What if my dog is scared?

It’s normal for dogs to be a bit nervous. They are very much like human toddlers and don’t always understand why there are being left without their favorite humans. Our jobs are focused on being as kind as possible in our processes to help your dog get through their grooming. For some dogs that means we get it done as fast as possible while other dogs may need to take breaks. The more routinely your dog comes for grooming the more it will feel like just another day.

-Do you groom puppies?

We love when puppies start their grooming journey with us early. This allows us to introduce things in a calm and easy way that doesn’t overwhelm them. We also offer happy visits and discounted grooming to puppies under 4 months old.
