 The point of these homemade mechanisms is to startle your dog out of jumping on the counter without you being available in the same room. (For example, if your dog has free range of the house and you are reading a book/watching tv)
You can certainly teach your dog to stay off of the counters while you are in the same room, but this is an alternative method if you have a smart dog who knows what they can get away with when you're not around.

It is very irritating for me when my dog always jumps on our counter. Once I cooked lasagna and he jumped over the counter and ate all of it on the floor. I was so pissed that day and didn’t let him in the house the whole day. Another situation was when it was raining so hard my dog came outside to play and then he went inside the house so wet and full of mud in his feet. I was at the counter reading and then he jumped on the counter to check for food. It was a hassle for me to clean up all the mess he made. 1/20/2016 12:12:00 pm
